How Does Spirit Care Work?

So… what exactly do you do?

A spiritual director can provide space to reflect and assess your inner desires, as well as suggested practices to help you listen to your Spirit. Gail, Spirit Care’s Spiritual Director/Companion, will meet with you, and witness your spiritual path.  Here is a short video example of what could happen in a session.

How do the meetings go?

Spiritual Companions usually meet once a month for an hour.  They can meet twice a month upon request.  Based on your preferences, Gail can suggest practices outside of the meetings for you to explore.

What if I don’t think that we are a good Spiritual match?

No problem!  We provide an interest form to give you an idea of what Gail can provide and a free hour-long consultation to see if we are compatible, as that is vital to the success of Spirit Care.  If you are still interested in spiritual direction, but do not find compatibility here, Gail can provide references to other Spiritual Directors, and you can also look on your own at sdicompanions.org and uusdn.org

How does Spirit Care work with the whole Interfaith thing?

You are absolutely encouraged to seek spiritual direction from within your own faith, but rest assured that Gail has been taught and certified about spiritual direction from the viewpoints of several spiritual traditions. Gail will focus more on the voice of the Spirit Within than a particular dogma.  This can be of help if you are considering changing denominations, houses, or religions, as well as if you are focused on grounding into your current faith.

See About Gail for more on her own spiritual journey and how she has taken on a Unitarian Universalist spiritual world view.  You can see how several faiths recognize spiritual care work from our What is Spirit Care page.

What kind of “practices” would we do?

There are so many scriptures, self-help books, and people leading workshops - all because everyone is different with different spiritual needs.  Gail’s training will help her identify the best practices for YOU, including things like Intensive Journaling, Visio Divina, Soul Collage, meditation, grounding, or even gardening, knitting and RPG-playing!
